Botany

The study of botany fits perfectly with 6-12 year old’s sense of curiosity and their desire to

explore and make sense of the world around them. They use their reasoning mind to assist in the exploration of the “How?” and “Why?” of their natural world.

We relate the functions of plants to their individual parts. For example, the job of the leaf is to make food for the plant, therefore leaves grow towards the light. We provide key presentations in order to arouse appreciation for plants and explore their adaptive strategies in order to survive. For example, tendrils on a plant such as a cucumber or passionfruit vine allow the plants to climb, or thorns on a bougainvillea protect it.

The children conduct experiments, go on nature walks and engage in art and cooking activities to consolidate their understanding of plants, as well as their versatility and life cycles (e.g. lotus). Children come to discover that plants provide food, oxygen, shelter & furniture, medicine, fuel and paper, as well as fibres to make items such as clothes, sheets & bags. Plants also bring peace and comfort to us.

Consequently, through this work we hope to instill in our students a sense of wonder and

responsibility towards plants and a desire to care for their needs.
